Sensation Is Often Reduced
After mastectomy and reconstruction, nerve sensation in the chest is frequently diminished or absent.
Many clients feel pressure and vibration during treatment but little else. Some feel nothing at all in the treated area. If you have been dreading this appointment, that is worth knowing.
Sensation varies by surgery type, by how much time has passed, and from person to person. Nerve regeneration continues for years after surgery, so two people with similar histories can have very different experiences.
When There Is More Sensation
Comfort tends to be different if:
You retained more sensation after your reconstruction
You are having restoration after a reduction or lift rather than a mastectomy
Treatment extends onto skin at the edges of the surgical area
Scar tissue is dense or tight
In these cases, most people describe the feeling as scratching or heat rather than sharp pain, and it comes in waves rather than continuously.
How Long the Appointment Takes
Plan on roughly two to three hours for your first session.
Most of that is not the tattooing itself. Design, color matching, placement, and getting symmetry right takes real time, and it is time worth spending. Actual pigment application is a smaller portion of the visit.
Your refinement session is usually shorter.
What Makes It Easier
A few things genuinely help:
Eat beforehand and stay hydrated
Wear a soft front-closing top that is easy to get in and out of
Bring headphones or something to occupy your attention
Bring someone with you if that helps you feel steadier
Tell us when you need a break, at any point, for any reason
